Ryan Lakanen Music Studio

Biography

I have always been passionate about singing and music, beginning as a child with home videos and talent shows then moving to choral singing and solos.

At the University of Michigan, I was classically trained in voice and studied choral music education, graduating in 2003. Performing in several musicals and operettas throughout my education, I was also a member of the University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society (UMGASS).

While living in the Memphis, TN, area, I served the Germantown Community Chorus (GCC) for many years both behind the scenes as president and board member, as well as in front of the chorus as Artistic Director. During the Covid pandemic, I brought the GCC online by organizing and producing “virtual” choir performances and rehearsals. My private studio also made the leap to digital-only for a time, as I continued to teach voice and piano lessons over Zoom.

Now residing in the metro-Detroit area, I am the Music Director of the Livonia Civic Chorus (LCC) beginning with the 2024-2025 season. I also continue to teach voice and piano lessons out of my home in Wixom or online. If you desire to grow as a musician, wish to brush up skills you learned long ago, or want to share the world of music with your children, please contact me

Besides directing and teaching, I enjoy singing in multiple choirs and performing professionally.  Currently, I can be found singing with the EMA Singers (based out of Expressions Music Academy), Beyond Choir, and the Beckridge Chorale. In the past, I have performed in front of the Germantown Symphony Orchestra numerous times as a soloist, with pieces that range from jazz standards to classical masterworks to holiday pops. In 2015 and 2016, I participated in the NATS Student Auditions for the Memphis chapter, and took first prize in the Adult Women category both years. Also in 2016, I was invited to join the chorus for Mozart's Requiem at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2018, I advanced to the CS Music Convention's national vocal competition held in Boston, MA, as well as performed in Opera Memphis' production of Madama Butterfly. In 2019, I toured Italy along with the University of Memphis' Chamber Choir. In 2022, I organized and rehearsed a group of singers from both Memphis Choral Arts and Germantown Community Chorus as I made my second trip to Carnegie Hall. Most recently, in 2023, I joined the University of Memphis once again to tour Greece.

I perform for the occasional wedding and special event. My repertoire spans a wide range of genres, from classical and opera to pop. I would love to make your special event even more special with live vocal music!
